The module itself cannot work on its own as it required some kind of encoding before being transmitter and decoding after being received; so it has to be used with an encoder or decoder IC or with any microcontroller on both ends. The simplest way to use it is with the HT12E Encoder and HT12D Decoder IC.
The module uses ASK (Amplitude shift keying) and hence it’s easy to interface with microcontrollers as well. If you are trying to use this with Arduino, then the Radiohead library would make things easy for you.
It is imperative to add an antenna to the modules. It can be attached near the marking ‘ANT’. The antenna is nothing else than a piece of wire of around 17cm in length. An antenna may increase the transmission distance from a few cm to a couple of meters
The transmitter operates at voltages between 3.3v and 12v the higher the voltage the better the range. The pin out is as follows
Arduino –> Transmitter

GND –> GND
D12 –> DATA
The receiver operates at 5v only. The receiver has 4 pins, 2 of them are labelled as DATA , you need to use only one. The DATA pin can be attached to any digital pin on both modules.
